HALLUX VALGUS: CAUSES AND TREATMENT

Before we go into therapy details and advantages of the Hallux Valgus splint , we would like to briefly inform you about the disease and its development. This way you can perhaps make yourself a first image of this disease and treatment methods if you find the possible signs and symptoms mentioned. Nevertheless, we always advise you to see a doctor first, because only he can tell you the exact diagnosis and will discuss a possible further therapy with you.

WHAT EXACTLY IS HALLUX VALGUS?

The disease of Hallux valgus is also known to many under the name bunion, consisting of a deformity on the big toe. It may well be that only one foot is affected, but usually this disease occurs on both feet at the same time. Statistically, more women than men are affected by this disease.

CAUSES OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE BUNION

Many people claim that the Hallux Valgus is caused exclusively by wearing: too high, too pointed and too tight shoes. However, this statement is false! It is true that wearing the aforementioned footwear contributes to the development of deformity on the toe and feet, but it is not solely responsible for it. Other factors such as a familial predisposition, an already existing foot deformity such as the splay foot or also various joint diseases contributes to the development of bunions.

SYMPTOMS OF HALLUX VALGUS

In the early stages of the disease, hallux valgus is usually not visible to the naked eye. It is only because the big toe its slowly curving further and further towards the middle toe, resulting in a big bunion forming along the side of the foot.

At the beginning of the disease it may not be noticeable nor sensed. However, severe pain in the toes and feet start to occur more and more frequently, which is unbearable for the affected person, especially at night. Furthermore, red pressure and small sores on the toes and feet follow.

If some of these symptoms are familiar to you, it is advisable that you make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible and have yourself examined for Hallux Valgus. Because once the disease has progressed, you may not even be able to fit into any shoes because of pain, and walking will become torture for you.

TREATMENT FOR A BUNION

Only your doctor can ultimately decide which treatment method and therapy is the right one. There are differences in the forms of treatment depending on how far the disease and the deformation of the toe have progressed.

If the hallux valgus is detected at an early stage, the PedEx rail may well be sufficient as a therapy to slow down the progress of the disease. Therapies such as orthotics and physiotherapy are also helpful. However, it is important to note that the disease cannot be cured by these therapies, but only stopped. If the Hallux Valgus has already progressed very far, you will not be able to avoid surgery. Therefore, it is important that you have your doctor examine you and discuss any possible therapy in detail

WHAT IS A HALLUX VALGUS TOE SPLINT?

Hallux Valgus Splint is a type of joint splint that is used to treat the disease of “Hallux Valgus“, also known as bunions. With the help of this splint, the disease cannot be completely cured, but it is possible that by wearing the splint can stop the further progress of an abnormal position on the toes, or correct a slight deformity of your foot.

Thus, therapy using a Hallux Valgus Splint primarily supports and protects the toes, but also the foot when walking, and often relieves the very painful area being affected.

As a rule, the Hallux Valgus Splint is worn at night, since it is not possible to wear these in a shoe with most models. Furthermore, walking with such a splint is not really comfortable. But now there are also Hallux Valgus toe bandages that were built so that wearing and walking during the day is quite possible. However, each patient must find out for themselves which method is more suitable.
